The Jacksonville Jaguars will kick off the 2021 season on July 27th. Jacksonville begins training camp to build the roster for, hopefully, a successful season. Expectations are still running extremely high for the Jaguars season.
Since the hiring of Urban Meyer as head coach, the future of Jacksonville Jaguars football has moved upward with a rapid climb. Drafting Trevor Lawrence, as the new face of the franchise, was just the beginning of changing the football culture. How have the veteran players reacted?
WR DJ Chark told Omar Ruiz of NFL Network, as reported by nfl.com, the following:
“I think we’re gonna shock a lot of people. … we’re gonna be an exciting football team, for sure.”
“… the sky is the limit, really, with us right now. We don’t know how great we can be but we know we can be great, for sure.”
It seems like the Urban Meyer approach to culture is very different than the previous coaching staff’s approach. Regardless, Meyer is on a mission to prove himself as a coach who was able to make the jump from college into the pro game. Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer, and Pete Carroll have won both national collegiate championships and a Super Bowl. Time will tell if Meyer adds his name to that list.
Training camp will have three important dates that will determine in building the team. Unlike last season, there will be three roster cuts in 2021. Currently, there are 90 players on the Jaguars roster.
They will have to cut five players on August 17th. On August 24th, Jacksonville will be down to 80 players. Then the big cut will occur on August 31st, the final cut down to the official 53 player roster.
Tim Tebow and Taven Bryan will need outstanding performances to make the team. Will Gardner Minshew get traded or find himself as a healthy scratch in 2021? There are lots of personnel questions to be answered in the upcoming weeks.
Most of all, what will be Carlos Hyde’s and James Robinson’s role in the offense with Travis Etienne on the roster? How will the Jaguars’ defense be vastly improved from the futility of last season? Will the offensive line keep Lawrence protected inside the pocket?
Stay tuned for more in the coming weeks. Be sure to catch the current JJC podcast where Andre Moultry accurately discusses the Jaguars’ situation in each podcast episode.
