If you were asked to name the best player on the Jacksonville Jaguars roster, who would it be? You might think in terms of potential or which player is the most exciting to watch. How about which player plays his position at an elite level compared to other NFL players.
Many analytical sites break down player performance on a play-by-play basis. Have you seen the fabulous passing charts for quarterbacks on NFL’s next-gen stats site? Also, footballoutsiders.com have their formula for ranking players; which is difficult to understand because they concentrate on plays that matter.
Pro Football Focus is becoming the standard of measure for player analytics. The site is owned by Cris Collingsworth. Now you know why Sunday Night Football regularly features the PFF statistical numbers.
Would it be a surprise to find out that Brandon Linder is the best player on the Jaguars team? Linder is the fourth-ranked center in the NFL by PFF. Actually, AJ Cann and Andrew Norwell rank as the 18th and 21st best guards in the NFL.
Linder has to stay healthy. The only season he played a full season in his career is 2019. Surprisingly, his backup, Tyler Shatley ranks as the 14th best center in the NFL. Perhaps the new coaching staff will have a new approach to keeping the players on the field and off the injury list.
Remember, success on offense begins in the trenches. Jacksonville is solid at the center position. Traditionally, the center position sets the protection and blocking scheme as dictated by the defense.
Stay tuned for more in the coming weeks. Be sure to catch the current JJC podcast where Andre Moultry accurately discusses the team situation in each podcast episode.
