The Jacksonville Jaguars training camp will begin on July 28th. There are plenty of new faces to replace those who have departed for the proverbial, greener pastures. However, Jaguars fans should keep a close watch on certain positional battles.
Most of all, the battle for the starting left tackle job should be on every fan’s radar. Cam Robinson and Will Richardson will compete for that spot. Why is the left tackle spot so important?
Seems like all the attention goes into the quarterback position. Gardner Minshew stole the hearts of the Jacksonville crowd in 2019. If it weren’t for the left tackle, Minshew may not have thrown a pass but gotten sacked from the blindside.
The left tackle is the guy who protects the quarterback’s blindside while he looks downfield. Which tackle will win the prized honor of keeping Minshew mania alive and well in 2020? Let’s take a quick look at each player.
Robinson was drafted in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He has started since his rookie year but has not been able to stay healthy for a full season. You have to love his nasty streak when he’s fully healthy. Robinson is not intimidated by anyone.
Richardson was taken in round four of the 2018 draft. He spent his rookie season injured and on the practice squad. He played in 15 games last season. Richardson might edge Robinson out to win the job.
Physically, both stand 6-feet-6-inches tall. Robinson weighs 320 pounds while Richardson weighs 306 pounds. Perhaps the Jaguars are preparing to move to lighter linemen with more mobility.
New Offensive Coordinator Jay Gruden will put his fingerprints upon the Jacksonville offense. Training camp will be an interesting thing to monitor this summer. Let’s see how things play out.
