As expected, Doug Marrone has been dismissed by Shad Khan. The Jacksonville Jaguars owner sounded very serious about getting this franchise on the right trajectory for a Super Bowl run. Most of all, he plans to be more hands-on in the future.
Let’s hope that he makes the right hire at GM and head coaching positions. Team culture is a very important ingredient for building a successful franchise. His past two head coaches have not fared well. Marrone had a very good run in 2017 but it was the exception instead of the rule.
There have been rumors that Urban Meyer will be named as the new head coach. Meyer is a great collegiate coach but he has left a trail of scandals in those places he coached. Perhaps it’s time to think outside the box.
An ideal candidate would be a coach that successfully prepared his players for the next level. Although he probably will not be interviewed, David Shaw would be an excellent choice to rebuild the Jaguars team. After all, Richard Sherman and Christian McCaffrey played for him at Stanford. They are elite-level NFL players.
Another great candidate would be Orlando Steinauer. Currently, he is the head coach of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. Team culture is a priority for him. He definitely deserves an opportunity to become the next head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Whether Khan hires an offensive-minded or defensive guru to lead the Jaguars, rebuilding the roster will take time. This roster has been gutted for the upcoming re-set. Khan has to hit a home run with the GM hire. Together the new coach and GM will make or break the franchise.
Actually, this franchise can only rise. It has sunk as low as it possibly can – or has it? 0 – 16 would be rock bottom but losing 15 consecutive games is just as horrible.
