Jacksonville may have stumbled upon their next franchise quarterback in the 2019 NFL Draft. Quarterback play is essential in today’s NFL. Everyone knows how good things abound with a good quarterback. Also, everyone knows how things go awry with bad signal-caller.
Remember how the succession of quarterbacks went so well with Mark Brunell to Byron Leftwich to David Garrard? Then suddenly, the quarterback play hit bottom until 2017. Most Jaguars fans would say that was the exception, not the rule for Blake Bortles.
The Nick Foles era was very short-lived. His time was cut short by injury and the rise of Gardner Minshew. Isn’t it crazy to realize that Blaine Gabbert started more games than Foles?
To the General Manager credit, Dave Caldwell took a chance on a quarterback from Washington State. Most signal-callers from the Mike Leach system generally have better collegiate careers than NFL careers. Minshew was drafted as the 178th overall selection in the sixth round .
Foles’ injury suddenly pushed him into the heat of the battle. Minshew Mania was born and quickly captured the hearts of Jaguars fans. Most fans donned the trademark mustache at each home game.
How well did he play? He completed 285 of 470 passes for 3271 yards. Minshew threw 21 touchdown passes and just six interceptions. Not to mention, He help elevate players such as wide receiver Dj Chark.
Since 2010, Jacksonville has had only two winning seasons, in 2010 and 2017. Garrard went 8-8 & Bortles went 10-6. The AFC South crown is up for grabs in 2020.
Minshew has to take the reins and lead the team with good smart play. The Jaguars season will rise and fall with the quarterback’s play. Let’s see how things play out.
